- Before fixing into masonry, the properties of the construction material (size, structure, material, compressive strength) must be precisely determined.
- For safety reasons, load testing must be carried out in the case of unknown or old masonry, in consultation with a design engineer.
- Edge distance is also important when loads are applied to masonry (e.g., roofs), as the load helps prevent structural elements from shifting.
- Even so-called solid bricks may contain cavities (e.g., MZ, KS), typically grip voids in the center (up to 15%).
- For hollow bricks, use drilling without hammer action. Faster drilling can be achieved with sharp carbide-tipped drill bits.
- Plaster or other non-load-bearing layers must not be considered part of the load-bearing base.
- When fixing into masonry, joints should be avoided whenever possible due to their non-homogeneous structure. If unavoidable, load capacity must always be reduced.
- Regulations govern fixing into joints (vertical or horizontal).
- Reducing the number of fixings in masonry only makes sense when high loads must be supported.
- Expansion anchors that generate high stress in the base material should not be used (except for frame or façade fixings).
- Injection fixing provides the highest load capacity in masonry.
